Brick by Brick LEGO exhibit at The Museum of Science & Industry

The new Brick by Brick exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry has us wondering why we didn’t know “Certified LEGO technician” was an actual job.

csm_BrickByBrick_FallingWater_016_ccc33d3a71

Featuring designs by Chicago native Adam Reed Tucker — one of just 13 Certified LEGO technicians in the world — the models include ancient wonders like Giza’s Great Pyramids and the Roman Colosseum and modern marvels like a 60-foot-long Golden Gate Bridge, a 9-foot-tall Burj Khalifa, and Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Falling Water” and, naturally, the Chicago skyline.

Moving Forward with the Clybourn Corridor

Finkl Steel

This morning, Crain’s released an op-ed rallying to pull the plug on the Clybourn Planned Manufacturing District (PMD). In case you weren’t aware, Chicago officials passed legislation in the 1980’s that prohibited residential development in this district as a way to secure area manufacturing jobs. But this area just lost its major manufacturer, A. Finkl & Sons, as it leveled its factories and moved production to the South Side.

With Cortland now a barren stretch from Clybourn to Elston, the PMD is aversely affecting the landscape and economy. The op-ed author, Scott Nations, argues that this legislation should be reversed and the corridor should include a mix of uses, including residential and high-tech manufacturing offices; we’re apt to agree.
