Amazon Set to Open South Side Chicago Distribution Center

Amazon.jpg&maxw=620&cci_ts=20150819140922 is getting closer to more customers in Chicago, with a deal to set up a South Side distribution center that will likely extend its reach in the city for ultra-fast deliveries.

Seattle-based Amazon leased about 150,000 square feet in a warehouse at 2801 S. Western Ave. in the Heart of Chicago neighborhood, according to people familiar with the deal.

The e-commerce giant’s deal follows its recent opening of a North Side distribution center on Goose Island and an announcement that it plans to employ 1,000 full-time workers at a larger facility in Joliet.

Until the 51,970-square-foot Goose Island warehouse opened in July, Amazon didn’t have any distribution centers in Illinois. But as customers demand faster and faster home deliveries, Amazon and other online retailers are expected to continue adding “last mile” facilities in or near highly populated neighborhoods.
